Presentation at the Council for Exceptional Children Conference

Last week, Dr. Jill Van Horne and Daniel Poling (a CMHC student)  had the incredible opportunity to present an invited workshop at the annual Council for Exceptional Children conference in Baltimore. This collaborative session brought together perspectives from both special education and professional school counseling, focusing on building strong, meaningful relationships between students and school professionals!

Daniel shared his research on interventions for strengthening teacher-student relationships, while Jill provided valuable insights on the therapeutic relationship, play therapy, and attachment theory.

Their session, "Actionable Steps for Building High-Quality Teacher-Student Relationships with Students Who Have Learning and Behavioral Challenges," included:

  • An overview of teacher-student relationships and how they support positive outcomes, especially for students with learning and behavioral challenges
  • A four-part model they developed to help teachers enhance relationship quality
  • Practical, actionable strategies for supporting students with disabilities
  • Guidance for administrators and teacher educators on fostering teachers’ capacity for relationship building
